A Transverse Shuttle, TS, is essentially a Reciprocating Shuttle but the direction of travel has been rotated 90° so the shuttle travels left/right rather than front/back. A prime example of a TS machine is the Singer 12/New Family. Singer 12 Album First one of these was built Ca 1863 & it remained in production for nearly 40yrs. TS machines with some improvements over the Singer 12 continued to be built for some time longer in both England & Germany & perhaps other countries as well. A TS machine will most often (there are exceptions) use a side loading Boat Type shuttle. The shuttle travels behind the needle, thus thread front to back.
