Although this model has features for a zig zag machine (stitch width and throat plate) the mechanism is only fitted for straight stitching. Where is the zig zag control mechanism and connecting rod there is none. There is no slot in the casting for the zig zag control lever.

Thomas Alva Edison was the most prolific inventor of all time. Besides
being responsible for the electric light, he also pioneered motion
pictures, the gramophone and a host of other devices. The great
inventor lodged almost 1,300 patent applications - so small wonder that
occasionally a flash of inspiration fizzled out in failure.

One of his oddest inventions was a voice-driven sewing machine. A woman
friend had complained that pedalling a conventional device by foot was a
tiresome business. Responding to the challenge, he proposed a sewing
machine which worked by converting sound waves into power.[[File:Edisonb.jpg|300px|thumb|right]]

Edison had already discovered that the human voice has considerable
potential energy, and had devised what he called a phonomotor to harness
it. A vibrating diaphragm was mounted in a mouthpiece connected via
spring and shaft to a flywheel. When the user spoke, the flywheel rotated.

Amazingly, the apparatus worked after a fashion. The trouble was that
the user had to bellow long, loud and at an unwavering pitch into the
mouthpiece. And this was very much more exhausting than merely
pedalling. The extraordinary contraption disappeared into the footnotes
of scientific history - along with a voice-driven power drill which
Edison also envisaged.

Anne started the machine but after 30 seconds it started popping loudly like it was popping popcorn. She turned it off quickly and there was a slight smell of smoke. It came from underneath the machine. When she looked in the base, she found three wires ending in a black thing the size of an AA battery that appeared to be the problem, as shown.

What should she do?

Badged as No. 2 bis. The German boat shuttle reads DRGM94641. Some metal parts under the machine are stamped P678 and SIN is just about readable, then something unreadable. then a B. The machine has an inspection plate on the shoulder and the bobbin winder is supported on a small pillar. The machine does not have a front slide plate extending to the front of the machine.

This machine was sold in England by the American Sewing Machine Company. It has an iron base, a cheaper option at the time of sale than a wooden base, and Mother of Pearl ornamentation. The bobbin winder is mounted on a small pillar and has different decals from the example above.

The machine has no front slide plate, but does have a front inspection plate on the shoulder.
