The Balance Wheel is the wheel at the right hand side of the head at the opposite end from the Face Plate, driven by a Belt, Hand Crank or Motor. The correct term is balance wheel, rather than Hand Wheel.

Balance wheels may be spoked, often with ornate spokes, or solid (usually for use with electric motors) known as disc balance wheels. Disc balance wheels may have a notch on opposite sides or a hole to accommodate a hand crank: Singer Parts - Balance Wheels and Singer 275 Balance Wheel.
